Nowadays,the expansion of postgraduate enrollment and the frequent conflicts in postgraduate-supervisor have caused widespread attention as well as many criticisms and questions.Based on the perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis,this study analyzes the performance and causes of conflicts in postgraduate-supervisor,improves the understanding of the relationship between supervisors and postgraduates,and provides some suggestions for preventing and defusing the conflicts in postgraduatesupervisor relationship.Qualitative research methods have been used in this research.Based on the 13 interviews,this study continues to supplement 5 interviewees by the target sampling and use one of the postgraduate interview discourses as the original material to conduct critical discourse analysis.Based on the framework of Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis,this research develops a Critical Discourse Analysis framework for conflicts in postgraduate-supervisor relationship—student's discourse,process of the conflict,and interpretation of conflict.In the discourse analysis,the postgraduate described a "disgusting" supervisor and the a “collapsing” postgraduate;in the process of conflict analysis,it is found that the conflict in the case is “without trust” and the accumulation of misunderstanding between the supervisor and the postgraduate.The interpretation of conflict is a macro-level analysis.The interpretation analysis found that the supervisor mastered “absolute control” due to inequality of power and identity between supervisor and postgraduate and the lack of an effective communication mechanismConsidering the under-representation of case analysis,this research combines the interview texts of other interviewees from the perspective of critical discourse analysis to supplement and confirm the findings of the case analysis in Chapter 3.From the text and process dimensional analysis,the research finds that the performance of the conflicts between supervisors and postgraduates has both explicit and implicit conflicts,and from the social dimension analysis,the reasons for the conflict between supervisors and the postgraduates are discussed in depth from the power inequality,identity difference,and the lack of an effective communication mechanism.Finally,this study proposes some suggestion to deal with the conflicts between supervisors and postgraduates.The supervisors and postgraduates should improve their understanding of postgraduate education,respect each other and try to ease the conflict through active communication.The postgraduate education institutions should give full play to their management and adjustment,strengthen the assessment and education of supervisors and postgraduates,reform the approach of " supervisor selection" and play a supervisory and regulatory role in the supervisor-postgraduate relationships.The postgraduate education system should be improved,the "change supervisor" system should be reformed,the postgraduate-supervisor ratio should be strictly controlled and the power and the obligation of supervisors should be regulated.It is important to create a social environment conducive to the harmonious development of supervisorpostgraduate relationship,and the community should supervise the development of colleges and universities and postgraduate training.
