The education of foreign students in China is booming, and the number of foreign students in China is increasing year by year. However, compared with countries with strong educational strength, there are still some gaps in the scale and quality of education of foreign students in China. In order to attract more high-quality foreign students, improve the quality of education for foreign students and further develop their education, the Ministry of Education issued a document entitled "Quality Standards for Higher Education for Foreign Students in China(Trial Implementation)" on October 9,2018.The document clearly put forward the requirements for the training of foreign students,in order to achieve the steady improvement of the quality of the training of foreign students in China. In the process of foreign students' education, effective guidance from tutors is an important way to improve the quality of foreign students' training, while a good relationship between postgraduates and tutors has a profound impact on the effect of tutors' guidance to foreign students. Therefore, based on the good relationship between graduate students and tutors, teaching can steadily improve the quality of foreign students' education and realize the sustainable development of foreign students' education in China. This study is based on the topic of "the relationship between graduate students and tutors in China".From the perspective of interpersonal communication theory, the relationship between graduate students and tutors is studied.Using qualitative research methods,14 graduate students from three different universities are selected to conduct one-to-one interviews. The author collects research materials through interviews with graduate students, and carries out data analysis based on interpersonal relationship theory. The following questions are tried to be answered: Firstly, what types of relationships do graduate students and tutors form? Secondly, what are the factors that affect the relationship between graduate students and tutors? Thirdly, what role does a mentor play in the ideal relationship between a graduate student and a mentor? Fourthly, how to build a good relationship between graduate students and tutors? After a thorough and detailed analysis of the research data, this paper uses the PACinterpersonal communication theory proposed by Eric Berne,a Canadian psychologist,to analyze the types of interpersonal communication formed between foreign graduate students and tutors. The study found that among all the foreign graduate students interviewed, there are four types of interpersonal relationships: parents-adults,parents-children,children-adults and adults.Foreign graduate students have a certain influence on the formation of relationship types, but tutors play leading roles in the whole process of relationship formation.Based on the analysis of the stage of the relationship between foreign graduate students and tutors,it is concluded that the relationship between foreign graduate students and tutors is mostly in the stage of "emotional exploration".Fewer foreign graduate associations have enough emotional communication and self-exposure with tutors, and the stage of relationship has entered the stage of "emotional communication".In view of the "authority" image of tutors, although foreign students do not have "fear" emotions, but without the relationship between graduate students and tutors entering a "stable exchange stage",tutors have not become "close friends".Through in-depth analysis of interview data, this study proposes four strategies to build a good relationship between supervisors and students of foreign graduates, namely, the matching strategy of supervisors, the strategy of spatial demand, the strategy of key points(events)and the strategy of active adaptation.Tutor-student matching strategy is the matching of research interests, personality characteristics, learning expectations and teaching behavior between teachers and students;spatial strategy is the mutual satisfaction of space needs between teachers and students in life communication and research autonomy;key-point strategy guides the development of student-student relationship through a certain critical time and period, and building a good tutor-student relationship requires accurate grasp of key points.Active adaptation strategy refers to the absolute "authority" of the actual status of foreign graduates and the formation of the independent teaching style of the tutors themselves,so the foreign graduates need to adapt to the tutors.Teachers should also take specific measures to deal with the special situation of graduate students studying abroad according to their own actual situation.
