In recent years,in order to adapt to the development of social productive forces, the mathematics curriculum of basic education in mainland China has been constantly explored and reformed. As an important carrier and support of curriculum, textbooks reflect and influence the development and trend of curriculum to some extent. The comparative study of textbooks has gradually become one of the hot topics. In some international mathematics assessment projects, students in Hong Kong have outstanding performance and maintain long-term advantages. Therefore, this paper selects two editions textbooks of middle school mathematics in mainland China and Hong Kong, and makes a comparative study from the angle of "number and algebra".This paper mainly uses the literature review and the text analysis method to compare the curriculum standards in the field of "number and algebra" in mainland and Hong Kong,as well as the similarities and differences between the two edition textbooks at the macroscopic and microcosmic levels. The conclusions of this study are as follows:(1)Through the comparison of curriculum standards,it is found that both mainland and Hong Kong attach great importance to the cultivation of students'symbol awareness and the practical application of "number and algebra" knowledge. The difference is that the curriculum design in mainland is based on "students",while the design of mathematics curriculum in Hong Kong is based on "content".The mathematics curriculum in mainland China pays attention to the penetration of mathematical thought, and the mathematics curriculum in Hong Kong tends to regard mathematical knowledge as a tool to solve problems, with a greater focus on the teaching of methods and strategies.(2)From the macroscopic level of textbook writing, the design ideas of two edition textbooks are different. The CTEP edition is biased towards the design idea of the learning material type, while the compilation of the PSP edition textbook clearly embodies the central textbook design idea. Therefore, the version of the textbook in mainland is more like "teaching material" than "learning material".(3)From the micro level of "number and algebra",all knowledge points in the two edition textbooks are arranged in a spiral way,but the knowledge capacity in the field of "number and algebra" in the CTEP edition is larger than that in the PSP edition. In addition, the focus of knowledge in the field of "number and algebra" in the two edition textbooks are different. Finally, this paper puts forward some suggestions on the improvement of the course of "number and algebra" and the textbooks compilation of mainland.
