A Study On The Relationship Between Negative Life Events And Subjective Well-being In Middle School Students

Objectives: This research intends to investigate the relationship between negative life events and subjective well-being of middle school students and explore the regulatory role and mechanism of the Dark Triad(Machiavellianism,psychopathy,narcissism).It provides theoretical direction for improving the happiness of middle school students and ensuring the growth of their physical and mental health.Methods: Random stratified sampling method was used to select about 1200 middle school students(junior middle school and high school)in H and G places.The Adolescent Self-rating Life Event Checklist(ASLEC),The Short Dark Triad in Chinese(SD3),The General Well-being in Chinese(GWB)were used to carry out the test and effective data were collected.Remove 79 invalid data and get 1136 valid data.Use descriptive statistics,independent sample t-test,Pearson correlation analysis,linear regression,moderating effect test and other statistical methods to process and analyze the data.Results:(1)Gender differences between boys and girls: boys were significantly lower than girls in the total score of negative life events(t=-2.90,p<0.01)and higher than girls in the total score of Dark Triad(t=5.22,p<0.001);there was no statistically significant difference between boys and girls in subjective well-being scores;(2)Grade difference between junior middle school and high school: junior high school students were significantly lower than high school students in the total score of negative life events(t=-12.19,p<0.001)and the total score of Dark Triad(t=-6.35,p<0.001).In terms of subjective well-being,junior high school students' scores were significantly higher than high school students(t=6.49,p<0.001).(3)differences in left-behind status: the scores of negative life events of left-behind students were significantly higher than those of non-left-behind students(t=5.02,p<0.001)and the scores of subjective well-being of left-behind students were significantly lower than those of non-left-behind students(t=-3.02,p<0.001).(4)Dark Triad(DT)was positively correlated with negative life events(r=0.341,p<0.01)and negatively correlated with subjective well-being(r=-0.227,p<0.01).Negative life events were negatively correlated with subjective well-being(r=-0.434,p<0.01).Negative life events and factors(interpersonal relationships,learning stress,punishment,loss,fitness,others)were negatively correlated with subjective well-being;Subjective well-being was negatively correlated with Machiavellianism(r=-0.213,p<0.01)and psychopathy(r=-0.271,p<0.01)in the Dark Triad,and positively correlated with narcissism(r=-0.065,p<0.05).(5)Narcissism(?=0.125,p<0.001)in the Dark Triad can positively predict subjective well-being and psychopathy(?=-0.21,p<0.001)can negatively predict subjective well-being.Psychopathy in the Dark Triad play a moderating role between negative life events and subjective well-being(?=0.175,?R2=0.026,p<0.001).Conclusion:(1)The scores of negative life events of girls in interpersonal relationship,study stress and healthy adaptation were significantly higher than those in boys and the total scores of Dark Triad of girls were lower than that of boys.These show that boys prefer to manipulate others,pursue stimulation and personality impulse.Girls may be more vulnerable to problems such as classmate relationships and study stress;(2)Negative life events,Dark Triad and subjective well-being were significantly different in junior high school grade,which showed that high school students had higher level of negative life events and Dark Trait and lower level of subjective well-being;Left-behind status affected negative life events and subjective well-being of middle school students;(3)Both negative life events and Dark Triad can negatively predict subjective well-being.It mainly reflected that the improvement of interpersonal relationship,health adaptation and other factors can reduce the level of subjective well-being of middle school students.Narcissism in Dark Triad can positively predict subjective well-being and psychopathy negatively predict subjective well-being.(4)Psychopathy in the Dark Triad play a moderatingrole between negative life events and subjective well-being,which can aggravate the the negative influence of negative life events on subjective well-being.This study provides several suggestions to enhance the subjective well-being of middle school students: to cultivate the interpersonal communication ability of middle school students;to ensure the physical and mental health development of middle school students through multiple channels and all directions;to guide the development of young people's personality in a positive and optimistic direction;to change the concept of psychological counseling in primary and secondary schools and to innovate the way of psychological counseling and so on.
