As a kind of social relationships among youth, peer relationship has an important impact on their personality and social development. Therefore,in order to further reveal the motivation and mechanism of adolescents' social withdrawal, this study intends to explore the relationship between peer rejection and social withdrawal, and the mediating role of social self-efficacy in this relation based on adolescents' peer relationship. In addition, this study will develop a group counseling intervention program for social withdrawal in middle school students and verify its effectiveness. In order to solve the above research questions, this study will carry out two sub-studies(i.e.,Study 1 and Study 2).In the first study,a questionnaire survey was conducted among 554 junior high school students(girls:42.2%;distribution range of age:12 to 15 years old)in a middle school in Jiujiang City,Jiangxi Province. All data was processed and analyzed using SPSS 23.0 and SPSS macros(PROCESS 2.0).Study 2 selected the top 24 students with the highest social withdrawal scores from the sample in Study 1,including 13 male students and 11 female students. These 24 students werethen randomly assigned to the experimental group(treatment,12 people)and the control group(no treatment,12 people). The educational contrast test method was used to investigate the effect of the group counseling intervention program on reducing social withdrawal. The results showed that:(1)There was a significant positive correlation between peer rejection and social withdrawal among junior high school students.Peer rejection was significantly negatively correlated with social self-efficacy,and social self-efficacy was also significantly negatively correlated with social withdrawal.(2)Social self-efficacy partially mediated the relationship between peer rejection and social withdrawal among junior high school students. That is,individuals who suffered from peer rejection would reduce their social self-efficacy,and in turn would increase their social withdrawal.(3)The group counseling intervention program developed by this study could effectively enhance students' social self-efficacy,and in turn reduce their social withdrawal. This effect not only has a short-term effect, but also has a long-term effect within a certain time point. Finally, the theoretical value and practical implication of this research are discussed, and the shortcomings and limitations of this research and possible future research directions are pointed out.
