At the beginning of the twentieth century,the Mandarin Movement rose.Chinese language began to become a subject independently.But at the beginning of the establishment of the subject of Chinese,the influence of reading classics and imperial examinations still existed.Many foreign advanced educational theories have been cited in China.During this period,Li Jinxi's New pedagogy of Mandarin was firstly published in 1924.It is first modern vernacular Pedagogy monograph and the first systematic Chinese teaching work in the modern history of our country.This paper intends to peruse this book to explore its gains and losses and tries to get some inspiration from it.This article is divided into two parts:introduction and text.The introduction part focus on the origin,present situation,method and significance of the research.The body part can be divided into three chapters.Firstly,I will introduce the background of New pedagogy of Mandarin,including the abolition of imperial examinations,the New Culture Movement,the debate between literary and vernacular works,and the efforts and contributions made by other contemporary scholars such as Lu Xun,Wang sen-ran,Xia Mianzun,Ye Shengtao and so on.By restoring the historical truth,I hope its place in history will be clear.Second,I will analyze the significance and limitations of New pedagogy of Mandarin in Chinese education.For example,its contribution mainly lies in putting forward the new teaching goal and the new teaching pattern,the historical limitation lies in lacks the appraisal system,some viewpoints are difficult to apply in the actual Chinese education and so on.Meantime,the exploration of the historical limitation of this book is one of the innovations of this paper.Last,I will further appreciate Li Jinxi's strong feelings of national identity and social responsibility.On this basis,I will start from the current practice of Chinese education,combined with the development direction of Chinese curriculum and educational documents to elaborate New pedagogy of Mandarin on contemporary Chinese education research and practice.I hope to find out some inspiring ideas and useful methods for Contemporary Chinese teaching.2020 marks the 130th anniversary of Li Jinxi's birth.The study of New pedagogy of Mandarin is not only a tribute to Li Jinxi,but also a hope for the future Chinese teachers.I hope that this study will deepen our understanding and thinking on Chinese education,keep in mind the original intention of Chinese education,and carry on to the future.
