Swimming is the second largest sport of the Olympic Games in the world.Swimming skills are also the survival skills in the water, which are favored by the vast majority of the people. Also, swimming is one of the fitness projects advocated and promoted in the National Fitness Program. In 1990,the state education commission clearly put forward: schools at all levels should improve the teachers and facilities construction, and create basketball, football, swimming and other public sports teaching activities,in School PE Work Regulation. At present, swimming has become an important part of college physical education teaching, and it is one of the compulsory courses for students to graduate. In the colleges swimming teaching, many students have different degrees of the fear of water, who haven't known swimming before,so the fear of water has become an important problem hindering college students' swimming study. Then,it has become a hot topic for college swimming teachers and relevant educators to discuss and think about how to overcome the fear of water and carry out targeted and effective relaxation training in swimming courses.Progressive relaxation training, also known as muscle relaxation training, refers to a gradual, ordered training method that tenses and relaxes the muscles. It is one of the most widely used techniques in behavioral therapy, which founded by American physiologist Edmund Jacobsen. In psychology,it is mainly used for the treatment of tension and anxiety, that the principle is to make trainees control their physiological activities and relax their muscles consciously and randomly,so as to reduce the level of arousal, and then, achieve the purpose of relaxing the mind to relieve tension and anxiety.Because the fear of water is a manifestation of psychological stress and anxiety,we try to overcome beginners' fear of water by introducing progressive relaxation training into swimming teaching. In addition, the relaxation of the muscles can increase the volume of water drainage in water, increasing the buoyancy of the beginners in water, which make the beginners more conducive to the surface, and overcome the fear of water and quickly learn to swim.In order to prove the effectiveness of the progressive relaxation training method on college public swimming classes,60 sophomores who could not swim in the public swimming classes of Southwest University were selected to participate in this teaching experiment. The students were randomly divided into experimental group and control group, with 30 students in each group. The experimental group added the progressive relaxation training method to theteaching process for auxiliary teaching, while the control group followed the conventional teaching method(teaching plan of the public sports swimming group of Southwest University)for teaching. One teacher taught the two groups in 14 days,2 hours a day,a total of 28 hours of breaststroke teaching. Before and after the experiment,we conducted questionnaires survey on students' water fear,so as to understand the changes of students' fear of water before and after the teaching, and then compared whether the progressive relaxation training method was more effective and faster for college students to overcome the fear of water than the conventional teaching method(whether it takes less time). After the end of the teaching experiment, two groups students were tested in the 25-meter breaststroke to see whether the results of the experimental group were better than those of the control group. And at the end of the teaching experiment, the two groups students were also investigated to evaluate the teaching method satisfaction. The results show that: firstly, both the progressive relaxation training method and the conventional teaching method can reduce the fear of water among beginners, but the progressive relaxation training method is better than the conventional teaching method, and it takes less time to overcome the fear of water.Secondly, according to the statistical test, there is a significant difference in students' performance of 25 m breaststroke between two groups(P <0.05).The experimental group has a better average performance in 25 m breaststroke and a smaller standard deviation than the conventional group.Thirdly, the survey results show that the experimental group is more satisfied with the teaching method than the control group. In college, breaststroke skill is the main swimming teaching. Then,we should attach great importance to students' psychological fear of water, and design the teaching and method reasonably, which make student overcome the fear of water, learning swimming skills step by step. Also,we know that the targeted progressive relaxation training in swimming lessons on auxiliary teaching is better than the conventional teaching methods. Therefore,it is practical significance to carry out swimming teaching assisted by progressive relaxation training, which stimulates students' interest in learning breaststroke, improves students' swimming skills and physical quality,as well as,develops students' sports abilities and cultivate students' lifelong sports habits.
