In recent years,as the Commonwealth of Australia attaches greater importance to the teaching of Chinese,the number of Australian secondary school students studying Chinese is increasing year by year.The education systems and policies of the Australian states are different,and the Chinese language teaching policies and the actual teaching status quo are different from state to state.Therefore,the research on Chinese language teaching in a certain area is helpful not only for discovering and solving problems in it,but also for providing some reference for experts and scholars in related fields to promote the development of overseas Chinese language teaching.The thesis takes the four representative schools of The Hutchins School,The Friends' School,Taroona High School and Mount Carmel College as the main targets of the study in order to understand the current situation of Chinese teaching in secondary schools in Hobart,Tasmania.After reading relevant articles,issuing questionnaires,conducting in-depth interviews and adopting other research methods,we found that the Chinese teaching in secondary schools has certain advantages in school policy,teachers,teaching facilities,etc.However,in terms of curriculum,students and major examinations,there are also problems such as single curriculum,insufficient learning motivation,outmoded promotion of HSK,and these problems,to some extent,cause the major common problems in Chinese teaching in secondary schools—As the grade rises,the number of middle school students who learn Chinese is decreasing sharply.In this regard,the thesis puts forward countermeasures and suggestions to the problems found in the investigation and research.There are six parts in the thesis.The introduction mainly expounds the origin and research value of the topic,the current situation of the research on Chinese teaching in Australia at home and abroad,the research ideas,research methods and innovation points.The second chapter mainly introduces the overall condition of Hobart,including the current situation of education,as well as the development and recent situation of Chinese teaching.The third chapter introduces briefly the four schools,including The Hutchins School,The Friends' School,Taroona High School and Mount Carmel College,focusing on the teaching like the curriculum of each school,and summarizing the characteristics of these four schools.At the same time,the study investigates and analyzes the Chinese teachers,the motivation of secondary school students in learning Chinese,the Chinese teaching materials in secondary school and the important Chinese examination with methods of literature research,interview,classroom observation and questionnaire.According to the results of the third chapter,chapter four further analyzes and summarizes the problems concerning Chinese teachers,curriculum,students,Chinese examination and Chinese teaching materials.In chapter five,in view of the problems summarized in the previous chapters,the thesis puts forward teaching countermeasures and improvement programs,including adding various types of Chinese language courses,improving teachers' s Chinese capability,stimulating students' learning motivation,cultivating good learning habits,using and compiling teaching materials,promoting Chinese examinations and so on.The conclusion summarizes the study and puts forward countermeasures,and points out the shortcomings in this study as well as the aspects needed to be improved.The purpose of this thesis is to objectively reflect the current situation of Chinese teaching in Secondary School of Hobart,and to provide reference for the study of overseas Chinese teaching and put forward suggestions for Chinese teachers,so as to solve the existing problems hindering the development of Chinese teaching and to contribute to the Chinese teaching in the Hobart.
