Along with the deepening of reform of educational system, the state will continue to increase the vocational education policy, and market forces add fuel to the fire, our country’s vocational education is developing rapidly, secondary vocational education has been paid more and more attention. English as one of the required courses in secondary vocational school is showing its importance gradually.However, compared with the high-speed development of the economy and society, the current English teaching in secondary vocational schools have lagged behind. It is unable to meet the economic and social development to have good English ability of technical personnel. Though English is the basic cultural course in all kinds of majors of secondary vocational schools, the related management authority, teachers, students and the employing units are not satisfied with its quality of teaching. Because the English study of present vocational school students only stays in the books, with the reality of the combination of less, causing disconnection of teaching and putting into practice. How to take appropriate measures to reform the current situation and improve the quality of English teaching, it has become the primary task of solving poor English teaching status, and it is also an important topic for the majority of teachers in secondary vocational schools to study and solve.The thesis conducts a survey study on English teaching of secondary vocational schools. Questionnaires, interviews and observations are used, in order to get an entire grasp of the present situation of English teaching in secondary vocational schools and to find out an effective way to solve the problems. The investigation focuses on the following aspects:students’learning performance and attitude, teachers’class teaching, textbook, teachers’research and professional development. Through questionnaire of180students in three vocational schools(two grades six majors) and through the classroom observation and through the interview of some leaders of the employing units, the author is clear about the English teaching situation of secondary vocational school. According to the analysis of survey results, the author has found out the problems existing in secondary vocational schools. It also puts forward the strategies and approaches that will improve the English teaching quality in secondary vocational schools:as for students, we should stimulate their motivation of English study, also we should cultivate students’confidence of learning English well; as for teaching, we should strengthen students’practical English skills, and improve English teaching with modern information technique; as for textbooks, we should teach students in accordance with their aptitude, changing teaching content, preparing school-based teaching materials; as for teachers, we should set up the consciousness of scientific research and master the scientific research method and form the habit of scientific research; we need to develop the English teachers’abilities to research and teach, and try to organize all kinds of training and learning well.
