Before the 1920s,under the influence of the traditional "women without talent is virtue",it was considered taboo for Chinese women to study in universities. In the May 4th movement, influenced by the thought of equality between men and women, the idea that women could not be educated in the same school as men in the feudal traditional thought was impacted.Intellectuals have asked universities to open female bans and carry out coeducation. In this debate, coeducation of men and women in universities began slowly.Under the advocation of the advanced intellectuals in China, the coeducation of men and women in university has gone through a long process from theoretical debate to practical completion. In this process, there are arguments and actions of male intellectuals and female intellectuals for their right to education. The degree of social openness is closely related to whether or to what extent people can accept the idea of coeducation. This shows that the development of China's higher education is inseparable from the political situation, social development and the development trend of the world trend. In 1921,Peking University enrolled the first female students, which symbolized the realization of coeducation in Chinese universities. This paper takes coeducation as the research object, and writes from the following parts.Firstly,it introduces the historical background of coeducation. This backgroundincludes the analysis of the situation of women's education before and after the May4 th Movement;secondly, the process of opening the ban on women in universities and the process of studying in the same school from debate to practice. This part is mainly written from the efforts of male and female intellectuals in order to enable women to enter the university campus;Thirdly, taking Huaxi Union University as an example, this paper introduces its course, curriculum and management of female students as the first university in Western China. At last, the paper lists the success of the first graduates Le Yicheng from West China Union College, which shows that women can achieve good results in the field of higher education;Fourthly, analyze the development of coeducation. This part mainly shows the increase and decrease of the number of female college students in different years after the same school in the form of tables;fifthly, based on the previous part,it analyzes the impact of coeducation on women, men and society. From the perspective of feminism, after the University opened the ban on women and implemented coeducation, the impact on women is mainly reflected in their social view, marriage view and self-identity.At the same time, the implementation of coeducation has a positive impact on the development of men and higher education in China.Through the analysis of the influence,we can think about the enlightenment and reference of coeducation in modern universities.
