At the end of the 19 th century and the beginning of the 20 th century,after completing the military occupation of Vietnam,French colonists gradually established a basic ruling order in Vietnam and shifted the focus of colonial policy to colonial development activities.In order to train the talents needed for development activities,France had carried out two large-scale reforms in Vietnam's education system.With the first reform,the French education system was extended from Nam Ky to Bac Ky and Trung Ky.In the second reform,the colonists promulgated the "General Regulations on Academic Affairs",which completely abolished Vietnam's traditional education system.Since then,Sinology had continued to decline while Western knowledge had gradually risen,and a class of westernized intellectuals had gradually formed in modern Vietnamese society.Westernization of Vietnamese intellectuals can be divided into two types.One is the transformation of traditional Sinology intellectuals.Although they grew up in the Sinology education system,they chose to accept Western civilization and used Western learning to update their knowledge system to adapt to the changes of the times.The second is the western intellectuals cultivated by the new education system.They grew up in the French education system and had an innate affinity for Western civilization.Sinology is more like a foreign civilization to them than Western learning.The former was represented by Phan Khoi,and the latter was represented by Pham Quynh.They established social organizations such as the Khai tri tien duc hoi,founded newspapers and magazines in Vienamese such as Nam phong tap chi,and formed the public cultural space of modern Vietnam.With the public cultural space constructed by Westernized intellectuals,modern Vietnamese society experienced a large-scale wave of Western Learning to the East,and knowledge of Western science,literature,academics,and philosophy continued to spread to Vietnam.Nam phong tap chi with Pham Quynh as the editor-in-chief was a typical representative.In the process of dissemination,the embodied Western civilization also collided with Eastern civilization at the micro level.However,these collisions did not hinder the spread of Western civilization.On the contrary,they deepened the understanding of Western civilization in comparison and further promoted the spread of Western civilization.In the wave of Western Learning to the East,how to understand Western civilization as a foreign civilization,how to deal with the traditional Eastern civilization and how Vietnam choose between Eastern and Western civilizations became the issue of the times.Pham Quynh and others chose conciliation as home for their dual cultural identities.Conciliationism can not only preserve Vietnam's traditional Sinology,but also absorb the strengths of modern Western learning.The essence of Sinology and Western learning can be the foundation of Vietnam's new academics.Nam phong tap chi vigorously promoted conciliationism,making it a widespread trend of thought in modern Vietnamese society,which had a profound impact on the development of Vietnamese culture.
