The Protection,Utility,and Community Building Of Guangxi Longji Terraces Agricultural Heritage

Focusing on the one-side pursuit of economic efficiency and using uncontrollable chemical agricultural supplies will bring the human kind to an extremely dangerous situation.Traditional agriculture system has met challenges for a long time.The villages which provide power for traditional agriculture system are essentially hollow on the inside with declining rural culture.Therefore,areas such as the continuous development of agriculture along with economic benefits,strategies to keep young people to stay in villages,and better inheritance of rural culture are worth researching.The Guangxi Longji terrace agriculture system in Guangxi,China has a long history.Under the traditional ethnic cultural influence,the Ancestors of Zhuang and Yao has created a compound ecosystem that is highly adaptive to the nature using resources from the mountain.This system is proved to be a “live” heritage of agriculture system.The Guangxi Longji terrace has already been a part of natives' life,including food,marriage,and funeral-it has become a special terrace culture in the Zhuang and Yao ethnic groups.The Guangxi Longji terrace is made of the Old Long Ji Zhuang Ethnic Terrace,the Peaceful Zhuang Ethnic Terrace,and the Jin Keng Hong Yao Ethnic Terrace.Moreover,the touring spot including the Guangxi Longji terrace has already opened for 18 years from 1999.On May.2011,this touring spot was honored to be a level 4A sight spot by the Chinese government.On May.2014,Guangxi Longsheng Longji terrace earned the honor of the second batch of China's major agriculture cultural heritage.On Jan.12 th,2018,the China National Tourism Administration announced that Guangxi Longji terrace system is recognized to be the global agriculture heritage.The medal will be awarded in the same year.With the development of tourism industry,the Guangxi Longji terrace system were able to create superior economic benefits while maintaining good ecosystem.However,this development has also changed the life and the culture of the localZhuang and Yao ethnicities.There arises a concern for the future of local ethnicities and rural culture because young people are moving out from the terrace area,causing the loss of heritage of tillage technique and ethnic specific arts.Such loss is harmful to the protection and utilization of agriculture heritage.The Old Long Ji Zhuang Ethnic Terrace is the core of the Guangxi Longji terrace agriculture system.It contains three villages named after Liao,Hou,and Pan,respectively.These three villages,including more than 1000 acres of their surrounding terrace,have a total area of 4.2 square kilometers.In June,2011,The Old Long Ji Zhuang Village has been set up as a touring spot.Through investigating the cultural value of the Guangxi Longji Terrace's agricultural heritage,examining the history and current status of the protection of this heritage,analyzing the core and issues surrounding such protection,and borrowing from the experience from building village communities in Taiwan,the author hopes to build the Old Long Ji Zhuang Village as an independent community with perspectives from human,culture,land,scenery,and output.The author hopes that building such community will attract the future generation to stay in the area so that they may inherit and develop the terrace culture.
