Patent licensing is a common form of transaction in the technology market, and it is also an effective channel to transfer technology.Patent licensing is an important way to promote the transformation, application and promotion of patented technology achievements. It is conducive to transforming advanced science and technology into practical social productivity and providing new products and new values to society. This thesis uses China's patent license data from 2002 to 2012 and uses 31 provinces and regions as the research unit to explore the impact of inward patent licenses and outward patent licenses on the company's subsequent innovation performance through negative binomial regression analysis. This thesis expands existing research on patent licensing by exploring three important factors:(1)the number of licenses,(2)the type of technology,and(3)the technology age of licensed patents. The results show that:(1)Inbound patent licenses have an inverted U-shaped impact on firms' innovation performance.Among them, domestic and foreign patent licenses have different effects on the innovation of the enterprise in the product market. When the proportion of invention patents is within a certain range, the increase in invention patent licensing has a more positive effect on the innovation performance of enterprises than that of utility model patent licensing. However, beyond the certain range, the increase in invention patents is not conducive to the promotion of innovation performance of enterprises. Therefore, when enterprises import patented technologies, they should consider the complementarity of technologies with different levels of innovation.(2)Outbound patent licenses have an inverted U-shaped impact on firms' innovation performance. When the proportion of invention patents is within a certain range, the increase in invention patent licensing has a more positive effect on the innovation performance of enterprises than that of utility model patent licensing. However, beyond the certain range, the increase in invention patents is not conducive to the promotion of innovation performance of enterprises.(3)Importing relatively new technologies and outputting more mature technologies are more conducive to corporate technological innovation.
