As a high-performance free-form surface machining tool,the end mill has good cutting performance and surface processing quality,and it is widely used in aviation,aerospace,automotive molds and other fields.However,due to the complex structure of end mills,its three-dimensional modeling is very difficult,time-consuming and low in design efficiency.Therefore,tool parameter modeling is needed to improve the efficiency of endmill design.Most of the related researches on end mill modeling are based on commercial threedimensional CAD drawing software(UG,Solid Works,Pro E,MATLAB,etc.)for secondary development.The modeling system completely relies on commercial software to run,so that its function expansion and market applications are greatly limited.At present,domestic grinding systems basically use foreign software,and commercialized domestic software is still immature.Therefore,establishing an end mill modeling and grinding simulation system with independent intellectual property rights is of great significance to the development of the tool industry.This article establishes the end mill parameterized modeling and grinding simulation system under the Visual Studio 2015 environment to realize the three-dimensional modeling of the tool,automatically generates the CNC grinding program and the simulation function of the grinding movement,and provides a platform combined the integration of the design with manufacture.The main research contents of the paper are as follows:1.Using Open GL to implement the end mill parametric modeling: According to the characteristics of the Open GL low-level graphics library and analyzing the peripheral edge and end edge structure characteristics of the end mill.The modeling system applies the point cloud modeling theory in the field of optical scanning reconstruction modeling to the parametric modeling of end mills.And the modeling method of end milling cutters based on key point-based point cloud modeling was proposed,a three-dimensional modeling of end milling cutters was realized by using Boolean operation method.The data format of the generated model is converted to *.obj file format to support reading and writing of other commercial software.2.Milling cutter grinding movement simulation: The same point cloud modeling theory is used to realize the parameter modeling of the grinding wheel.Based on the established end mill model,the CNC grinding program is automatically generated,and the NC program is verified through the grinding movement simulation to get the correct codes.The end mill's parametric modeling and grinding simulation system developed in this paper achieves the unification of end mill design and visualization,and automatically generates a three-dimensional solid model of end mill that satisfies the design parameters.Combining with the parametric modeling of the grinding wheel,the CNC program is automatically compiled,and the grinding movement simulation is used to verify the correctness of the NC program.This paper develops a parameterized modeling and grinding simulation platform for end mills based on Open GL,and proposes a point cloud based on key points for end mill model.Besides it realizes end mill milling motion simulation.The results show that the system is stable in operation.The modeling accuracy and modeling efficiency are high,and it has good scalability and practicality,effectively improving the design efficiency of the tool.
