Currently the commonly-used tools in our CNC machining include ring mill cutter, ball-end mill and flat-end cutter. Because the ring mill cutter has the advantages of both ball-end mill and flat-end cutter, and it is extensively applied in the production of key parts in automotive, aerospace and other fields. These commonly-used NC tools are mainly grinded by the introduction of foreign grinder or purchased from the foreign country but they are very expensive. When we grind the rill mill cutter, and there is a transition edge in the connection between the rake face of tool’s circumferential cutting edge and arc-edge. Thus it will influence on the cutting performance of tools. In order to improve this situation, the grinding cutter is need to be made in-depth researched, and each part of grindstone grinding tool’s grinding trajectory is established, and the rill mill cutter with the smooth connection between rake face of tool’s circumferential cutting edge and arc-edge is obtained, thus it will improve the cutting performance of ring mill cutter.Firstly, this thesis study about the definition of helix and the mathematical model of rotary surface equation, and the geometric model of the edge line of solid carbide ring mill cutter is established, and the equal helix angle cutting edge curve equation of the ring mill cutter’s arc-edge and circumferential cutting edge is obtained, and the structure of rill mill cutter and tool angle.is analyzed.Secondly, according to the configuration parameters of the rill mill cutter and the geometric model of blade curve, and the coordinate transformation, differential geometry and other theoretical knowledge is used in this thesis, and the grinding trajectory of grinding wheel axis vector and the center of grinding wheel in the process of grinding the ring mill cutter is obtained, the obtained mathematical model is simulated by using the Matlab, and the accuracy of established model is verified.Finally, the obtained mathematical model of grinding trajectory is processed, According to motion characteristics of the wheel of the five-axis tool grinding machine of Saacke, and the exercise instruction value of the five-axis of tool grinder is derived in the Matlab software, and prepare for grinding the ring mill cutter. The built-in simulation software NUMROTO of five-axis tool grinding machine of Saacke is used to verify the obtained exercise instruction value, and check whether the grinding machine has overrun or over-cutting phenomena in the moving process, then the five-axis tool grinding machine of Saacke is adopted for grinding process, and finally a ring mill cutter with smooth transition from the circumferential cutting edge to the rake face of arc-edge is obtained.The research methods adopted in the thesis will provide a theoretical basis for grinding the ring mill cutter through existing five-axis NC grinding machine, and provide reference for the research on similar grinding tool or designed tool.
