Gansu Province is an important potato producting area in China,which climate conditions were suitable for potato growth.The field trial was carried out at the agricultural irrigation area of Hexi Corridor,where the agronomic practices were outdated,the environmental conditions were diverse and lack of suitable production techniques.the‘atlantic'potato were used in this study,in order to select the best planting density for local production,whole seed tuber and seed piece planting were used,and economic efficiency were analysed through plant height,stem thickness,number of main stems,number of tubers,rate of big tuber,yield and starch content.Randomized block design were used in this experiment.we designed five seeding density,and a single row on a 90 cm ridge was used.These consists of 4200 plants/667m~2,4500plants/667m~2,4800 plants/667m~2,5100 plants/667m~2and 5400 plants/667m~2in same plant spacing.The contrast experiment of whole seed tuber and seed piece planting were carried out at each density,and the main results were as follows:In whole seed tuber planting,both plant height and number of main stems were progressively increased with the increase of planting density,but the increasing planting density showed a trend for lower stem thickness,the fresh shoot yield and root yield increased first and then decreased with the increase of planting density,which had the same changing regularity of yield.The 4800 plants/667m~2treatment had the highest yield(3264.37kg)and the rate of big tuber.In seed piece planting,plant height,stem thickness,number of main stems,fresh weight and yield whole seed tuber planting were the same as changing regularity of whole seed tuber planting.The 5100 plants/667m~2treatment had the highest yield(2810.41kg/667m~2),and 4800plants/667m~2treatment had the rate of big tuber.The starch and dry matter in tuber were progressively increased with the increase of planting density,in both whole seed tuber and seed piece planting.The 5100 plants/667m~2treatment had the highest starch content in whole five treatments,and there were significant difference in starch and dry matter content among different planting density treatments.The yield of whole seed tuber planting was significant higher than seed pieceplanting,in seeding density from 4200 to 5400 plants/667m~2,the increase ranged from 4.73%to 17.52%In whole five treatments,the using of both fried chips and whole flour processing,the economic efficiency of whole seed tuber planting was higher than seed piece planting,except5400 plants/667m~2treatment.The economic efficiency of whole seed tuber planting reached the maximum when the seeding density was 4800 plants/667m~2,which were 4176.6 yuan/667m~2for fried chips and 3197.24 yuan/667m~2for whole flour processing.The economic efficiency of seed piece planting reached the maximum when the seeding density was 5100 plants/667m~2,which were 3650.6 yuan/667m~2for fried chips and 2807.49 yuan/667m~2for whole flour processing.In this study we can find that the yield and economic efficiency of whole seed tuber planting reached the maximum when the seeding density was 4800 plants/667m~2,and the yield and economic efficiency of seed piece planting reached the maximum when the seeding density was 5100 plants/667m~2,Overall,the yield and economic benefits of the whole seed tuber planting were better than seed piece planting in same seeding density.therefore,whole seed tuber planting is recommended to use in production.
