Zhao Kaikun(1954—2016)is a lifetime professor of Jilin University of Arts and one of the typical representatives in Chinese expressive painting.Starting from the line used in his oil paintings, this paper analyzes the evolution of the line's styles in his oil painting during various periods and finally confirms that the use of line by Zhao Kaikun is a manifestation of stereoscopic expressiveness, reflecting his stereoscopic modeling ideas on oil painting creation.Through probe about source factors of the line in Zhao Kaikun's oil painting, and his creation under the influence of various factors,it can be concluded that the type and style of the line in his oil paintings also vary at different periods. From the structural lines in the initial period gradually to symbolic lines in the exploration period,Zhao Kaikun's oil painting language becomes increasingly mature after many years of creation in nature. The line in the mature period, based on combination of structure and symbol,is further transformed into forms rich in stereoscopic expressiveness and runs through all his mature oil paintings.A distinctive line style with Zhao Kaikun's characteristics is thus formed.By comparing lines with stereoscopic expressiveness used by Zhao Kaikun with works of other artists who also use lines,Zhao Kaikun's unique artistic style of and stereoscopic modeling idea on shaping withlines can be more clearly confirmed.
