Tong Wenxian was a famous Catholic missionary who came to China in the late Qing dynasty,affiliated with Paris Foreign Mission Society.He was also an outstanding French sinologist,naturalist and thinker in the 19 th century.He had been devoted into the study of Chinese language and culture,and he wrote a textbook in French,The Grammar of Chinese Language,for the Chinese learner who were French,or whose native language was French.Based on the study of The Grammar of Chinese Language,this paper will take it as a representative to explore the perspective of Tong Wenxian in the field of Chinese studies,analyze his unique methods for Chinese teaching,and find out his contributions to the development of Chinese linguistics,in addition to discover the influence and guiding significance of his Chinese view on Teaching Chinese as Second Language(TCSL).This paper is composed of five parts:The first chapter is the introduction,which introduces the biography of Tong Wenxian,as well as the significance and the research methods of this topic.Tong wenxian was a French Catholic missionary came to China.After returning to France,he finished the Chinese textbook,The Grammar of Chinese Language,which is based on his study of Chinese language and his experience of Chinese culture.The book introduces Chinese language from all the aspects of phonetics,character,grammar and pragmatics systematically and detailedly.The author is willing to expound the Chinese view of Tong Wenxian through the research to this textbook.The second chapter is The Grammar of Chinese Language from the perspective of Chinese ontology research.This part introduces the compilation background and the basic content of The Grammar of Chinese Language,summarizes the Chinese view reflected in the textbook from four aspects: pronunciation,vocabulary,grammar and character,and then find out the characteristics which are contained in these Chinese view.Tong Wenxian had profound attainments in Chinese language studies.In this work,he sorted out the framework of Chinese linguistics systematically and thoroughly,and supplemented it with his own analysis and thinking,thus showing his unique view of Chinese and making great contributions to Chinese ontology research and Chinese teaching.The third chapter is The Grammar of Chinese Language from the perspective of teaching Chinese as a foreign language.As a textbook for French learners of Chineselanguage,The Grammar of Chinese Language has the characteristics of nationalization,comprehensiveness and hierarchy,and embodies the widely popular teaching method of grammar-translation at that time.This chapter makes an analysis and research on The Grammar of Chinese Language as a Chinese teaching material from the aspects of its characteristics,positioning,content arrangement and teaching methods,and finds out its value and significance for Chinese teaching.The forth chapter is the value and influence of Tong Wenxian's Chinese view.It takes the research mainly from the influence of Tong Wenxian's Chinese view on Chinese reserch and Chinese teaching reserch,in addition to the limitations of Tong Wenxian's Chinese view.The Chinese view of Tong Wenxian plays a connecting role in the study of Chinese ontology,which to some extent makes up the gap in the study of Chinese language and lays a foundation for the development of modern and contemporary linguistics.It provides a new perspective for the study of Chinese from the perspective of foreign learners.From the perspective of Chinese teaching,the Chinese view of Tong shows that teaching Chinese as a second language should start from the perspective of thinking of foreign learners and help them establish their Chinese thinking mode on this basis.Secondly,teaching of Chinese as a second language should combine languageknowledge teaching with communication-skill teaching.The last part is the conclusion.On the one hand,the author summarizes the Chinese view of Tong Wenxian,and points out the merits and shortcomings of the Chinese teaching method in The Grammar of Chinese Language.On the other hand,the author reflects on the shortcomings during the thesis writing.
