The potential construction refers to a syntactic structure of "possible" semantics concerning someone's or something's ability to develop, achieve or succeed.More and more scholars attach high importance to the potential construction, because it represents itself variously and contains rich semantic connotation. This paper starts with the Liao Zhai Li Qu Ji(called Liao for short)representing the Northern Dialect in the Late Period of Modern Chinese, and relating Shandong dialect background.Contents such as marked elements, syntax structures, negation forms and interrogative forms along with relevant characteristics of potential construction included in Liao are analyzed in details with mathematical statistics,so as to reveal the basic features of this kind syntactic structure. The paper is divided into five chapters.Contents of each chapter are as follows:The first chapter is the introduction,in which the author expounds research purpose and meaning, research current situation and deficiencies, research thinking and method, defines the notion of the potential construction, and gives explanations about the version of Liao and marks occured in context. In the second chapter, the pre-mark,post-mark and mark co-occurrence are analyzed. In Liao, besides “neng(?)”,“neng gou(??)”,“hui(?)”,“ke(?)”,“ke yi(??)”,“dé(?)” in common use in modern Chinese, disappeared makers such like “neng gou(??)”,“neng dé(??)”,“neng dégou(???)”,“de(?)”,and “dai hao(??)”,“zhong(?)”,“dai zhong(??)”representing the characteristics of the Northern Dialect are found. In the third chapter, syntactic structures of the potential construction in Liao are analyzed.Syntactic structure with pre-mark is “marker+V”,not ruling out particular structures such as“hui +N”.Syntactic structure with post-mark,including “V+marker”,“V+marker+C”,and“V+marker+O” which disappeared in modern Chinese. In the fourth chapter, negation forms and interrogative forms are analyzed. In Liao, negation forms are represented with the flexible use of the negative word and the diversity of forms.Negation forms combined “bu(?)”,“mei(?)”,“mei you(??)”,“wu(?)”,“wei(?)”,“wei bi(??)”,“wu(?)”,“bu ceng(??)”,“xiu(?)” with potential markers and “V bu(?)C” merely consisted of negative words are mentioned in this chapter. There are three kinds of interrogative forms in Liao :the yes-no question, the positive-negative question, and the specific question. There is no alternative question in Liao.In the fifth chapter, the potential construction in Liao is compared to which in in modern Chinese from three aspects such as marked elements, marked semantics and syntactic structure. The potential construction in Liao is revealed by summarizing language phenomenon existed in modern Chinese but not in Liao,or vice versa, and comparing the meaning of one potential marker in modern Chinese to which in Liao.
