| “A Comprehensive Dictionary of Chinese Characters” contains various ancient glyphs,such as oracle bone inscriptions,bronze inscriptions,small seal characters and official script,which can reflect the evolution of the form of Chinesee characters.It is helpful for readers to trace the historical inheritance of Chinese characters’ forms.But it is impossible for “A Comprehensive Dictionary of Chinese Characters” to be perfect,and there are inevitably some flaws and inaccuracies.Since the publication of the first edition of “A Comprehensive Dictionary of Chinese Characters”,many scholars have provided valuable suggestions for revision based on the ancient characters glyphs,few of which have been adopted by the second edition.The vast majority of the typographical errors in the first edition of the book have not yet been corrected and have been retained by the new edition.The main problems are: copying distortion,incomplete glyph,inaccurate source,misinterpretation,lack of important glyphs.Because of these problems,“A Comprehensive Dictionary of Chinese Characters”,while trying to show the evolution of form,is unable to do so.In order to make it more perfect and have higher value,it is necessary to revise and supplement it completely.In view of this situation,this article will check the ancient characters in the book with the original one by one.The aim is to make a comprehensive inventory of all errors in the book,and strive to restore the true face of font.At the same time,it uses various materials to supplement them,trying to make the evolution of characters more clear.This paper consists of five chapters,including introduction,error correction and addition of glyphs.Chapter One includes a brief overview of “A Comprehensive Dictionary of Chinese Characters” and the existing research,as well as the necessity and significance of its revision.This part introduces the contents and methods of this work.Chapters Two to Four is the main body of the paper.In the order of the “A Comprehensive Dictionary of Chinese Characters”,the ancient characters of the new edition are revised one by one,from radical "Ya" to "Zhu".Chapter Two is the revision and supplement in ancient characters glyphs from radical “Ya” to “Shu”.Chapter Three is the revision and supplement in ancient characters glyphs from radical “Wen” to “Ne”.Chapter Four is the revision and supplement in ancient characters glyphs from radical “Li” to “Zhu”.Each chapter is divided into two sections,each corresponding to ten radicals.A total of 1136 Chinese characters have been revised and supplemented.Chapter Five is to summarize the types and causes of the typographical errors in the book. |
