As one of the few Japanese directors that are currently active in the world's three major film festivals,Hirokazu Koreeda has been working diligently ever since he entered the television and film industry ever after graduation, although he studied in the literature department in university. From "Maboroshi" in 1995,to "Shoplifter" in 2018,Hirokazu Koreeda has made 13 feature films.Rooted deeply in reality, his films are directed at describing, observing and analyzing what have happened or still happening in Japanese society, and reveal his great concern about human being.Focusing on the issues closely related to the state of people's existence,Hirokazu Koreeda's feature films share some similarities with the existentialism represented by Sartre and Heidegger in some aspects. It should not be a totally futile attempt to philosophize his feature films from the perspective of existentialism.Text analysis method and existentialism theory will be mainly used in this dissertation to comprehensively investigate the films of Hirokazu Koreeda's so as to pursue a better understanding of them.Systematically philosophize and expound the 13 feature films of Hirokazu Koreeda's on the basis of some of the most important existentialism concepts,it appears that the subjects of the films incline to the propositions of the existentialism.Specifically speaking, firstly, the absurdity and self-delusion shown by Hirokazu Koreeda's films shows his profound introspection on the state of human existence.Next, the representation of making choice and responsibility in Hirokazu Koreeda's films reveals his unique views on freedom which is considered as the nature of humanity.Subsequently, the contemplation of human and non-human suffering in the films of Hirokazu Koreeda's expresses his idea that people can grow through suffering. And then, the attention paid to family members and the others in Hirokazu Koreeda's films visualize his expectation of people establishing a harmony relationship with each other. At last, through the analysis of the self-approval and self-remold of the characters in the films, and bring in the setbacks and impasses Hirokazu Koreeda experienced in his career and his intervention in social events, his position on transcending himself is expounded.Recognized as a fine film director with deep thoughts,Hirokazu Koreeda has never averted his eyes from social reality while filming.Although he has won the Donostia Award of San Sebastian International Film Festival along with many other awards and honors in international scope,he will hold the belief of "I shoot, therefore I exist" as long as he is still filming. His thoughts and achievements will be fully accepted as time goes on.
