The activities related to festival temple fairs are a classic topic in Folklore research.The pilgrim association with worship of water deity and effected by the Grand Canal in the east capital.In 21th century,the Grand Canal have ascribed to UNESCO World Heritage,at the same time,'Canal Cultural belt' was announced in Development Strategy of Beijing.With these conditions,the pilgrim association which is prevalent in the east of Beijing continue as an intangible cultural heritage of canal also is popular in academic research.This research is based on the pilgrim association in Zhangjiawan Township Tongzhou District Beijing,analysis its organizations and perform activities of that associations in the canal context through text research,field work,in-depth interviews and other qualitative research methods.Described the historical change of it,and the status changes as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in the process of urbanization.This paper explains the relationship between performing Intangible Cultural Heritage and community festivals,the status of inheritor in rural communities and other practical folklife.Hope to improve the case study of Intangible Cultural Heritage in the north canal.In the introduction,the origin and significance of the topic,the existing research on the pilgrim association are sorted out,and the key concepts are explained.The first chapter describes the characteristics of Zhangjiawan,and its cultural history and present situation.The second chapter,describes the development of pilgrim association since the Ming and Qing dynasty,focusing on the different circumstances before and after it became an Intangible Cultural Heritage project.The third chapter is a case study,focusing on its organizational structure and communicate system,further explaining the significance of it in the folklife.The fourth chapter discusses the creative transformation and development of its participation on community festivals and commercial performances.It is found that the pilgrim association plays an important role in enhancing the cohesion of villages and promoting the construction of a community.The pilgrim tradition is the basis of the holding of the local Folk Culture Festival.Similarly,the emerging Folk Culture Festival also promotes the current pilgrim association,and they advanced side by side.Whether they will exist or disappear fundamentally depending on support from their community.
