| The case study considered in this thesis work is a 108 cm celestial globe by Vincenzo Coronelli, kept at Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana in Venice. In particular, the thesis presents the results of the Computed Tomography investigation of this ancient globe, carried out recently in order to get information on the internal wooden structure and metal elements and to evaluate the conservation state of the globe. The XVII century’s globe was scanned on-site by means of a mobile CT system developed by researchers of the Physics and Astronomy Department of Bologna University. After the reconstruction, the different elements of the inner structure, including the central pole, wooden caps, beams, horizon rings, surface wood sectors, nails with various dimensions were shown. The features and arrangement of these elements revealed the construction technique of the globe maker–Vincenzo Coronelli. The thesis will explain the conservation state and each structural component of the globe,so helping the restorers to understand the existing and potential conservation issues. Moreover, the comparison with other globes made by coronelli will be implemented for a better understanding. |
