Semiotics In The Context Of Painting

Semiotic theory has a critical role to play in artistic activities as for the symbol has been extensively used.It affects how an artist conveys ideas and in what ways he/she formed attitudes as well as express feelings.At the moment when people absorb information through appreciating an artwork,they were influenced by semiotic theory composed of symbols.This study will discuss semiotic theory within the context of painting.Specifically,efforts will be made to elaborate the basic concepts of the symbols and semiotic theory,analysis issues challenging its usage,and illustrate the significance of applying the theory to painting context.Analysis of art works will also be made to support the discussion.Notably,semiotic theory focus on expressing thoughts through symbols.It is through this process generates greater insight into how we,as human beings,convey thoughts and find meanings.Symbols are by no means intuitional concepts that can be understood by how the audience look at it,but rather a process of conveying meanings,which is indirect and require divergent thinking to interpret.All the more so within the context of art.It is important to point out that plain imitation should not be considered as a complete work.This is because what we can interpret from an artwork goes beyond the realm of how it was displayed through creating certain aesthetic qualities.Acknowledging that painting features with visual language,it conveys meanings and values on the basis of such a character.Painting is a form of visual art with uncovered meanings extending its original domain.This paper will: 1)explain the crucial role of semiotic theory in the context of painting,starting from elaborating the basic concepts,which are essential in academic research,and identifying issues to date;2)state the value and meaning of this study,art works will be chosen as examples to support analysis,offering greater insight into how this theory was applied;3)present results.
