The major changes and development of network technology have prompted countries to use social platforms to carry out the practice of public diplomacy in succession.The United States,as the origin of the Internet,is the leading country of Internet technology development and social media coverage.It is also the first to have realized the importance of network diplomacy and started to use social media to launch public diplomacy.The U.S.State Department is the representative of the new U.S.governmental diplomatic form,and Twitter is the main position of the State Department in carrying out external publicity and public diplomacy in social networks.This thesis takes the State Department's Twitter as a case study example to dig into social media and American public diplomacy.Through data analysis method and analytic hierarchy process,this thesis aims at summarizing experiences of using social media to advance foreign policy and summing up the characteristics,advantages and disadvantages of State Department's China-related publicity and public diplomacy on Twitter,so as to provide reference for China.This thesis is divided into four chapters.The first chapter gives a historical overview of American diplomacy's use of social media and explores the social media channels and means of China-related publicity in American diplomacy.The second chapter expounds the subject,object,diplomatic strategies and goals of the State Department when implementing public diplomacy on Twitter.The third chapter is the main part of this thesis,which is mainly based on the State Department's 383 China-related tweets published between the opening of the account(October,2007)and October 20,2017.It gives a general overview of the related tweets and divides the samples according to context and topic respectively,in order to clarify the diplomatic tendency of the State Department in using social media to carry out China-related publicity,to evaluate the effect of the State Department's China-related publicity on Twitter,and to have a clearer understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of China-related publicity and public diplomacy implemented by the State Department's Twitter.The result of the research of this thesis is summarized in the fourth chapter,which illustrates the revelation of the U.S.governmental China-related publicity and public diplomacy in social media platforms to China.
