Since the cold war began, public diplomacy has become one of important strategicmeans in America’s foreign communication, which also has played an indispensible andsignificant role to American democratic politics and social development in the ideological andinternational exchanges. As China becomes the world’s second largest economy followed theUnited States, and with China’s growing influence and voice on the international stage andworld affairs, America’s public diplomacy with China has become its diplomatic strategy andan important part of national defense strategy, now China has become an important object ofAmerican public diplomacy.As the rapid development of new media and the information society and civilconsciousness enhancement, the U.S. has strengthened the public diplomacy with China bymeans of implementing the state council’s defense and public diplomacy strategy, socialnetwork platform and the join of nongovernmental organizations, etc in recent years. As theprincipal part of American public diplomacy with China, U.S. department of state andgovernment officials are masters of public diplomacy, meanwhile America’s mainstreammedia, non-governmental organizations and other non-state actors are the main force of publicdiplomacy. This paper analyses the diplomatic’s content and characteristics from the Obamaadministration’s public diplomacy to China, and evaluates the effect on its public diplomacystrategy. And then sums up the United States’ public diplomacy to China’s enlightenment.
