In multi-national countries, national identity and state identity have both generality and particularity. As a non-independent cross-border nation, the Kurdish ethnic identity and state identity are naturally contradictory and conflicting.Compared with the other three countries, the contradictions and conflicts between Iraqi Kurds' national identity and state identity are more intense.National identity surpasses state identity and becomes the highest level of Kurdish identity. The Kurdish regional government disobeyed the policies and laws formulated by the central government and repeatedly forced the independence referendum.By emphasizing their national identity, the Kurds deconstructed the discourse system in which the central government denied the history of the Kurdish nation and imposed the Iraqi identity on the Kurds. As an independent people, the Kurds themselves differ from the Arabs of Iraq in terms of language, religion, festivals and tribal culture. The artificially integrated nature of the Iraqi state has led to the questioning of the legitimacy of the Iraqi regime among the various ethnic groups in the country. In addition, the government's official ideology has long been torn between Iraqi nationalism and Arab nationalism, and its coercive assimilation policy has fostered Kurdish solidarity and anti-government ideology. The intervention of various countries in the Kurdish issue also intensifies the contradiction and conflict between the national identity and state identity of Iraqi Kurds. It is not only an opportunity but also a challenge to resolve the contradiction and conflict between Iraqi Kurdish national identity and state identity.Iraq's current federalism meets the political and cultural needs of the Kurds, and there is widespread opposition at home and abroad to an independent Kurdish autonomous region, making it possible for the central government to forge a unified national identity. But at the same time, disputes between the central and local governments over oil and land have become a difficulty in resolving national and state identities. For now,the Iraqi Kurds, influenced by factors at home and abroad, will have to stay in Iraq, making their dream of statehood hard to achieve in the short term.
