The Chemistry curriculum reforms that we vigorously promoted in China have attached great importance to experimental educational functions and affirmed the im-portant role of experiments in cultivating students' core competencies for a long time. The cultivation of students' problem solving abilities is not only a requirement of new Chemistry courses, but also an important part of Chinese basic education reform and development. Therefore, the research on solving chemical experiment problems has always been concerned by chemical research scholars and educational researchers. The paper takes the reaction of formaldehyde and copper hydroxide as an example to ex-plore whether there are differences in the cognitive structure and thinking level of stu-dents at different levels and in different open-ended experimental problems.Based on information processing theory and experiential learning theory, the paper expounds the concepts of chemical experiment problem solving and thinking process in detail, systematically collects the existing experimental materials of chemical exper-iment problem solving process and the experiment between formaldehyde and the new copper hydroxide, then summarizes and reflects on the problems needing to be solved in the domestic researches on the topic. The research on the experimental ontology of the reaction between formaldehyde and copper hydroxide is carried out to determine the experimental conditions, analyze the experimental products and draw experimental conclusions.Based on this, develop an evaluation questionnaire of chemical experiment problem solving for group testing, and analyze and test it with Rasch Model, then revise the tool.Chemical experiment core problem task and auxiliary problem task for case study are developed as well. For doing quantitative research, design codes for the anal-ysis of think-aloud protocols and a rubric for evaluating experimental operations.Dur-ing the empirical stage, chemical problem solving studies are conducted from three levels:117 students are selected for paper and pen tests and the results of the question-naire test are analyzed with variance;9 students are selected for think-aloud to analyze problem solving approaches and paths;6 students are selected for the design and oper-ation,then do the qualitative analysis based on the problem behavior graphs and do the quantitative analysis based on the rubric. The research results show that students have different levels of mastery of different types of knowledge;design and operation of experimental problems are conducive to the exploration of students' cognitive structure and thinking level;representation, strategy and behavior style affect experimental prob-lem solving;and open-ended experiment is conducive to developing students'thinking ability.According to the research results, corresponding suggestions are made to im-prove students' ability of problem solving in chemical experiments.
