"Data analysis" is one of the six mathematical core competencies mentioned in Fundamental Task of The Ministry of Education about Comprehensively Deepening Curriculum Reform,Strengthening Moral Education and Cultivating People which was issued in 2017,and is one of the hotspots in academic field.Currently,there are few researches on the current data analysis ability in rural areas.This paper centers on the rural areas with weak education foundation in Shandong and investigates the current situation of data analysis ability of 243 grade-9 students from 3 middle schools.This paper firstly adopts literature research to analyze the connotation and structure of "data analysis ability" and divide it into several levels;secondly,this paper adopts test paper method to test the current situation of data analysis ability of the students;and finally,this research conducts statistics and quantitative analysis on the test papers.The research result shows that:(1)The data analysis ability of the grade-9 students in rural schools is low on the whole,which has large difference from that of the students in urban areas;(2)The data organization ability and probability application ability of grade-9 students in rural schools are weak;(3)There is no gender difference for data analysis ability of grade-9 students in rural schools,but the probability application ability of the girl students is worse than that of boy students;(4)The data analysis ability is related to usual performance,wherein,the team with good usual performance is obviously better than that of the teams with moderate and poor performances respectively.Based on the above result,the following teaching suggestions are proposed for data analysis ability cultivation of middle school students:(1)The rural teachers should pay attention to teaching basic knowledge of data analysis and deeply exploring basic methods of data analysis;(2)The teachers should introduce real examples to encourage the students to participate in the whole process of data analysis;(3)The teachers should organize students to have experiments and experience the significance of probability;(4)The teachers should focus on improving the probability application ability of girl students.
