From the beginning of the 21th century,the context for mathematics instruction has received extensive attention in the field of education in China.And we have made some achievements both theoretically and practically.Recently with key literacy becoming a hot topic and the increasing influence of PISA,people pay more and more attention to the relationship between mathematical knowledge and real life,they want students to be able to use what they have learned to find problems,analyze problems and solve problems in a situation.Therefore,we need to know the current situation of our students' ability to solve word problems,in order to do that,we need to find a way to evaluate the ability.In this paper,we study the ability of solving word problems in mathematics of the fourth grade students in primary school,and further explore the factors that influence this ability.1870 students from a city in Jiangsu were randomly chosen as experimental subject,who were tested through test papers and questionnaires.The test paper which is integrated by PISA is used to test the ability of solving word problems of the fourth grade students in primary school,the questionnaire is used to analyze the factors that affect this ability.In addition,we want to explore the gender and regional differences in this ability.The conclusions are drawn as followed:(1)In general,the ability of solving word problems of the fourth grade students in elementary school belongs to the upper middle level.Most students can transfer their mathematical knowledge to different situations,but most students do not reach the level of knowledge innovation.(2)There is no significant gender difference,but there is a significant difference in solving word problems among students from different regions.The students from central urban city have higher ability in solving word problems than students from non-central urban city,and all three levels are like this.(3)The mathematics learning interest,learning strategy and self-monitoring ability of the fourth grade students in this city's elementary school belong to the upper and middle level.There are significant gender differences in mathematics learning interest and learning strategy,students from central urban city are significantly better than students from non-central urban city in this three aspects.(4)The mathematics learning interest,learning strategy and self-monitoring ability have significant positive correlation with the ability in solving word problems.Among them,the mathematics learning interest and self-monitoring have significant predictive effect on solving word problems.(5)Students who have different understandings of word problems have different ability in solving these problems.
