The Chinese literature textbooks,as the carriers of knowledge,are not only the major education medium of Chinese language literacy,but also a kind of social practice.It keeps conveying social ideology and value orientation both explicitly and implicitly.The existing Chinese literature textbooks of senior high seem “unrelated to gender”.However,all male and female characters in the textbooks has distinct gender differences,whose impact on students' physical and mental development cannot be ignored.This study focused on the senior high Chinese literature textbooks(PEP edition);analyzed male characters in the textbooks in light of the social gender theory and gender role theory;discussed the influence of the male characters on students' gender consciousness based on the result of a questionnaire survey among teachers and students;and attempted to provide teaching strategies against negative effects of male characters in the textbook on students.This thesis has four chapters.Chapter 1 discussed the urgency,unique advantage and unshakable obligation to help students develop gender consciousness with the Chinese literature textbooks of senior high from two perspectives,namely difficulties and challenges of Chinese education and necessity to strengthen gender consciousness in Chinese education.Chapter 2explained the core content of gender role education in light of gender socialization,gender androgyny theory and social role construction theory.InChapter 3,through a quantitative statistics,classification and analysis of male characters in the Chinese literature textbook of senior high,based on the result of a questionnaire survey among teachers and students,the author presented the problems with the impact of male characters in the textbooks on students' gender consciousness.Chapter 4 elaborated both positive and negative influences of male characters in the textbooks and proposed targeted solutions from both compiling and application of the textbooks.
