In the past few decades, urbanization in China has been greatly improved. However, urban expansion in Chinese cities is not coordinated with their actual economic performance and population growth, this phenomenon is called 'urban sprawl'.After Chinese "four-trillion" policy was published in 2008,local governments were more willing to sprawl cities, since they can obtain more land leasing to raise capital for infrastructure construction.Thus,"four-trillion" policy is more likely to push extensive development existing in Chinese cities all the time. This paper takes dataset of residential land transactions in 285 cities of China from 2003 to 2013 as sample, systematically examines causes behind the urban sprawl in China, and tries to analyze whether "four-trillion" policy accelerates the urban sprawl.Empirical findings are:(1)Improvement of residents' income and Increase of investment are factors which mainly push Chinese urban sprawl.(2)When local governments increase the supply of residential land, urban sprawl in China will decelerate.Cities with higher dependence on land finance will accelerate urban sprawl significantly.(3)Land price accelerates urban sprawl insignificantly, which means, there exists no alternative relationship between capital and land.(4)GDP per capita has an inverse U relationship with urban sprawl, which means cities with middle GDP per capita increase cities' boundaries dramatically.(5)Cities in Midwest expand their city boundary improperly.(6)Cities expanded their city boundary significantly after "four-trillion" policy was published in 2008.Because cities' boundaries in China have been increasing since 2009.The research in this paper has practical guidance value. It can improve the understanding of urban sprawl and its causes. What's more, this paper provides empirical evidence for comprehensively evaluate "four-trillion" policy in 2008.Last but not least, new ideas are provided on how to define and measure urban boundaries in this paper.
