Agriculture is a basic industry that is related to the national economy and people's livelihood. As China's economy continues to grow, people's living standards continue to increase, and the demand for agricultural products is increasing. However, due to the accelerated development of urbanization, cultivated land continues to decrease, and various factors have led to the continuous increase in China's agricultural imports.Under this background, the pace of "going out" of agricultural enterprises in China has obviously accelerated, and expanding foreign direct investment in agriculture has become an important choice for the development of agricultural enterprises and the improvement of international competitiveness. However, due to lack of experience and fierce international competition,China's agricultural enterprises have gone out of their way to solve problems. The United States is the world's largest agricultural producer and exporter, and an important foreign direct investment country.Japan's agriculture also faces the contradiction of more people and less land.Agricultural foreign direct investment starts early and is large. The experience and lessons of foreign direct investment in agriculture in the United States and Japan have important reference significance for Chinese agriculture to "go global".On the basis of reviewing the international direct investment theory such as international production compromise and investment development cycle theory, this paper systematically studies the historical process of foreign direct investment of agriculture in the United States and Japan, the total scale of agricultural foreign direct investment, investment location and investment subject.Combing the analysis and summarize the main practices of the United States and Japan in promoting agricultural foreign direct investment. Then based on the long panel data of the United States and Japan from 2005 to 2017,a multivariate linear model was constructed, and the FGLS method was used to empirically analyze the factors affecting the foreign direct investment of agriculture in the two countries. The results show that the proportion of agricultural employment in the United States and Japan, agricultural products The six variables of import volume, net FDI inflow, net FDI outflow, political and economic risk index and agricultural policy support are positively correlated with agricultural foreign direct investment, per capita gross national income, agricultural output value, cultivated land area, foreign exchange reserve scale and agricultural product export volume. The variables are negatively correlated. Finally, the article puts forward corresponding policy recommendations for the main problems of China's agricultural foreign direct investment, drawing on the experience and lessons of the United States and Japan. It is believed that strengthening government policy support, increasing trade openness and improving political security can promote a healthier development of China's agricultural foreign direct investment.
