As China's economic development gradually enters a transition period,in order to pursue a higher quality of life, people require enterprises to actively fulfill their social responsibilities. And the academic community has begun to incorporate social performance as an important criterion for corporate evaluation.According to the upper echelon theory, the background characteristics of senior managers will have an important impact on corporate behavior, including the implementation of corporate social responsibility practices. Therefore, many scholars take the gender, age, educational background and other characteristics of managers as the starting point of their research. However, there are few research results that select the background characteristics of communist party member as prior variables. Therefore, this paper incorporates the background characteristics of party members into the executive characteristic system based on communist culture and political culture with Chinese characteristics, and broadens the new perspective of research between executive characteristics and corporate social performance.Firstly, take the upper echelons theory and stakeholder theory as the theoretical basis of the research, analyze the relationship between the party member background of the chairman and the social performance of the enterprises, and put forward the research assumption. Then select the private enterprises in the A-share listed companies from 2010 to 2016 as the research object, take the Ranking CSR Ratings Data as the proxy variable of the corporate social performance, and use the dummy variable of the chairman's communist party member background as a measure of the interpretation. In this way, through the one-sample test, multiple regression and other empirical analysis methods to verify the influence of chairman's communist party member background on the social performance of the company, and through group regression to explore the adjustment effect between equity balance degree and debt level. The research results show that the chairman's communist party memberbackground has a significant positive effect on corporate social performance;compared with low equity balance degree companies, the positive impact of chairman's communist party member background on corporate social performance is more pronounced in companies with high equity balance degree;compared with high debt level companies, the positive impact of chairman's communist party member background on corporate social performance is more pronounced in low debt level companies. Finally, according to the results of empirical analysis, put forward corresponding policy suggestions.Based on China's special political and cultural background, the study of the relationship between communist party member background and corporate social performance through theoretical analysis and empirical analysis can expand the international applicability of upper echelons theory and stakeholder theory, and provide evidence support for the factors affecting corporate social responsibility in emerging market countries. At the same time,it can also appeal to enterprises to actively participate in social responsibility practices and protect the rights and interests of stakeholders,so it has both theoretical and practical significance.
