The outline of the 13 th five-year plan puts forward five development concepts,of which the concept of innovative development takes the first place.China's economy has changed from high-speed development to high-quality development, and the innovation-driven development has become more and more important. As the innovation activities spread to the whole world, the competitions among cities gradually change to the competition among urban agglomeration.Only urban agglomeration with advantages in industrial clusters and economic scale can meet the challenges of urban competition and cooperation. The Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration is the highland of China's economic development with many innovation factors and activities agglomeration. The development plan for the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration proposes that: fostering a stronger economic growth pole, becoming a leader in new economy development, implementing the innovation-driven development strategy, and strengthening innovation development in key areas are four important goals. The development of innovation has obvious spatial agglomeration characteristics and spatial spillover effect.Innovation-driven development of the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration requires further analysis of the spatial innovation characteristics and the influencing factors of urban innovation differences. This paper summarizes the research of urban agglomeration and regional innovation theory.Based on the patent application data of 26 cities in Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration from 2007 to 2017,the research analyzes the spatial characteristics of city innovation capacity by using Gini coefficient, concentration index, and exploratory spatial data analysis(ESDA)methods,Meanwhile,an innovation city circle of Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration is constructed. Then,a spatial measurement model is established to explore its influencing factors with four variates, including R&D inputs, innovation environment, innovation policy and innovation basis. The model is also compared with OLS regression estimation. At last, some suggestions are proposed to provide reference for the innovative development of each city in the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration based on the results of model analysis. The results show that the innovation capability of the urban agglomeration of the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration is decreasing from the littoral to the inland, along with a spatial diffusion tendency. The constant decrease of locational Gini coefficient and concentration index reflects the more balanced distribution of innovation output. The index of Moran's I indicate that the spatial correlation and agglomeration characteristics of urban innovation capacity are remarkable, but weaken with time.Moran's I scatterplot shows a stable spatial pattern.High agglomeration cities include Shanghai,Suzhou,Wuxi and Nantong. While, the improvements of innovative capacity of cities like Hangzhou,Nanjing and Hefei does not play a leading role among the surrounding cities. The number of R&D personnel, universities and research institutions has a significant positive impact on the innovation capacity of cities in Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration, among which the R&D personnel number is the most important factor, while the fiscal expenditure on science and technology and per capita GDP have a significant negative impact on urban innovation capacity.
