With the rapid development of logistics industry, distribution centers have become important nodes of logistics systems, which play an important role in improving the efficiency of logistics systems. In a distribution center, order picking is one of the most important operations, and its efficiency directly affects the efficiency of distribution center. As such, the design of picking system is the key to the efficiency of distribution center. At present, market demand for the goods distributed by the center has properties such as high varieties, small batch sizes, and high ordering frequencies, which requires a operator pick a large variety of goods in a relative short period of time. This paper aims to improve the order picking efficiency of a distribution center PG company so as to speed up response to customer demand and reduce delivery delay.Firstly, based on relevant theories, this paper analyzes the data concerning the operation of distribution ceter and orders, and find out that work load imbalance is the main factor which contributes to the inefficiency of the picking line.Furthermore, the characteristics of customer orders are obtained by using EIQ method which combines quantitative and qualitative analysis.Secondly,an opitimization model is established, based on order information processed from PG company distribution center historical data, and taking workload balance as objective function. Finally, genetic algorithm is used to solve the optimization model, and performance indexes before and after optimization is compared to see whether the improvement is significant in terms of management application. In addition, the possibility of applying this model in the daily operation of distribution center is explored. In a word, this paper built a optimization model to allocate goods among pick stations and balance workloads in the picking line.
