With the deepening of economic globalization, the focus of global economic development continues to shift to the service industry, and the status of service trade in global trade has become a pivotal factor, which has become a key factor in measuring the level of a country's international competitiveness. The development of China's service trade is relatively backward, the development speed is slow, the service trade is in a deficit state, and there is a trend of gradually increasing. The overall competitiveness of service trade is not strong and is in a disadvantaged position. Moreover, the development of various industries in service trade is unbalanced. The service industry has a certain competitive advantage, but the capital and knowledge-intensive service industry is at a disadvantage.Japan is similar to China and is also a country with a deficit in service trade and generally has no competitive advantage in service trade. However, unlike China,Japan not only has a comparative advantage in traditional service industries such as labor-intensive,but also modern services in capital and knowledge. There is also a competitive advantage in the industry.Relevant research shows that the high development of Japan's service industry is the main reason why China's service trade competitiveness is lower than that of Japan. Therefore, comparing the differences in the competitiveness of service trade between China and Japan, and further exploring the main factors affecting the differences in the competitiveness of service trade between the two countries, can provide guidance and reference significance for the development of China's service trade.Firstly, based on the import volume, export volume and proportion of service trade in the world, this paper discusses the development status of service trade between China and Japan from two aspects:overall service trade and each industry. The international market share, the symmetric dominant comparative advantage index(SRCA index),the trade competitiveness and its evolution index(TC index,RTC index)and the Michaely index were used to compare and analyze the overall service trade and the competitiveness of each industry in China and Japan from 2000 to 2018.The results of the index show that the overall competitiveness of China and Japan in service trade is not strong, and Japan is at a disadvantage in the international competition, but Japan is generally stronger than China.China has certain competitive advantages in traditional labor-intensive industries(such as construction industry),but its competitiveness in capital and knowledge-intensive industries(such as patent royalties and royalties)is far less than that of Japan. Moreover,China's dominant position in tourism industry is gradually declining in recent years.Secondly,by selecting relevant variables to conduct an empirical analysis of the influencing factors of China and Japan's international competitiveness in service trade,it was found that per capita GDP,urbanization level and service trade openness are conducive to enhancing China's service trade export competitiveness, while per capita GDP and manpower Capital, service trade openness, goods trade level and service trade level have significant effects on Japan's service trade exports. Finally, based on the above research, suggestions are made from four aspects of improving human capital level, giving full play to the positive role of goods trade, optimizing trade structure, and increasing the opening of service trade to promote the development of China's service trade.
