Optimizing the regional spatial structure is one of the main goals of China's regional development strategy, and forming a new driving force for development by adjusting the regional spatial structure to promote economic development transformation and upgrading is an important direction of China's regional development strategy. Therefore,in accordance with the development trend of regional spatial structure, promoting the development of regional spatial structure to a more reasonable direction is a topic worthy of further study. As far as China is concerned, relevant development plans and studies have proposed the creation of growth poles that support national economic development and the formation of a regional multi-polar growth pattern to promote the optimization of regional spatial structures. However, the current research is more about the strategic concept of regional multi-polar growth pattern, and relatively few studies on the impact of regional multi-polar growth pattern on economic performance. It is mainly reflected in three aspects: first, the lack of a theoretical mechanism analysis of regional multi-polar growth patterns affecting economic performance;second, the lack of detailed research on the evolution of regional multipolar growth pattern;third, there is a lack of empirical research on the impact of regional multipolar growth patterns on economic performance. In order to solve the problems existing in the above existing studies, this paper mainly does the following three tasks.First, based on the growth pole theory and the regional spatial structure theory, from the perspective of matching the growth pole economic subject with the location, using the matching cost to incorporate the heterogeneous space into the theoretical analysis, analyze the theoretical mechanism of the impact of regional multi-polar growth pattern on economic performance. On the basis of theoretical analysis,it is proposed that the enhancement of the regional multi-polar growth pattern is generally beneficial to improve economic performance, and its influence is inferred because of different factors such as factor endowments.Second,China's top ten growth poles were identified by the method of population density, and an indicator of regional multi-polar growth pattern RMPI was constructed from the perspective of matching economic subjects with locations.According to the changes in the RMPI values of the multi-polar growth pattern at the national level and the urban agglomeration levelfrom 2000 to 2017,it is found that, from a national perspective, the degree of multi-polar growth pattern is increasing;from the perspective of urban agglomerations, the development degree and evolution trend of multi-polar growth patterns in different urban agglomerations are quite different, however, the overall multi-polar growth pattern of urban agglomerations has increased more than it has been reduced.Third,an empirical model is constructed based on relevant theories, the empirical results show that,at the national and urban agglomeration levels, the multi-polar growth pattern index increases by 1%,per capita GDP increased by 56.585% and 0.536%,therefore,the increase in China's multi-polar growth pattern and the degree of multi-polar growth pattern of urban agglomerations are conducive to improving economic performance. However, the empirical results of the classification of urban agglomerations show that, for every 1% increase in the multi-polar growth pattern index, the per capitar egional GDP of the eastern, central and western urban agglomerations increased by 0.812%,-0.309% and-18.13%,therefore,the impact of the enhanced multipolar growth pattern of urban agglomerations in different regions on economic performance varies. It can be seen that in the process of adjusting the spatial structure of various regions in China, different strategies need to be adopted for different regions to achieve the purpose of improving economic performance by optimizing the regional spatial structure.
