This thesis examined the relationship between gender stereotype internalization and heterosexism in regards to Albertans' attitudes towards same-sex marriage. It was proposed that individuals with higher degree of gender stereotype internalization are more likely to have negative attitudes towards same-sex marriage. Additionally, such internalization of gender stereotypes was proposed to mediate the relationship between demographic characteristics such as age and education level, and attitudes towards same-sex marriage.;The results showed that the effects of several demographic variables (e.g. sex, age, education level) on attitudes towards same-sex marriage had diminished after controlling for gender stereotype internalization; however, the effects of demographic variables remained significant. Therefore, gender stereotype internalization partially mediated relationships between sex, age, education level and attitudes towards same-sex marriage. |
