| This critical review provides a thorough overview of bi/multiracial identity development theories, examines the links between mono-racial and bi/multiracial development models, and explores the challenges to bi/multiracial identity development.;Empirical research on the growing multiracial population in the United States has focused largely on the documentation of racial identification, analysis of psychological adjustment, and understanding the broader political consequences of bi/multiracial identification. This critical review was a guided exploration of the conceptualized racial identity development among bi/multiracial individuals and the assumptions underlying their theories. This includes, for the purpose of comparison, a brief historical overview of theories of racial identity development for the bi/multiracial population and monoracial identity development models as well as the challenges of developing a racial identity within societal racial categories and racial identification are highlighted. This critical review also demonstrates a need for future studies and training of social work professionals. |
