Abstract/Summary:
Focusing primarily on the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts of North America, this thesis recognizes the harsh reality of hurricanes and their power to permanently destroy a city if it is not prepared. The longer a city takes to become functional the less likely relocated evacuees are to return. Large venues such as stadiums are often used to fulfill the need for an emergency shelter but are neither equipped nor prepared to do so. This thesis aims to prove that the needs of evacuees would be met through the design of a temporary city within a stadium which would maintain the social support and interaction people depend on. This would eliminate the need for relocation during disaster and provide a better chance of survival for the city. New Orleans, and the Louisiana Superdome are chosen as the city and stadium for this thesis along with the devastating incident of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 as a case study.
