Abstract/Summary:
This action research project examined motivational factors influencing students' decisions to drop out of school. This study was conducted using a survey administered at 12 General Educational Development testing centers across Minnesota from January through February 2007 to 144 students who dropped out and were taking General Educational Development tests. Although there were a variety of factors influencing student's decisions to drop out, many students indicated a combination thereof, leading to their decision to quit. Almost three-fourths of the respondents indicated there were things that could have been done to help them remain in school. Three-fifths of the respondents indicated even though they were encouraged to remain in school, they decided to drop out. Overwhelming numbers, (78.68%) of respondents reported they had no contact from schools during or after dropping out. By identifying common drop out motivations, educators will be better prepared to make changes to help students succeed.
