A cross sectional study of intercollegiate basketball and soccer coaches' salaries at state institutions in North Carolina

This study examined the remuneration of intercollegiate athletics coaches at state institutions in North Carolina within the context of the Equal Pay Act of 1963 (EPA) and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII). The study analyzed the salaries of men's and women's basketball coaches and men's and women's soccer coaches at the fifteen state institutions in the University of North Carolina system. The purpose of this study was to determine if gender is a noteworthy factor in the comparatively lower remuneration of female coaches when compared to male coaches. This study found some important differences in salary across gender bounds, some of which are easily justified by legally recognized factors while some other differences are defensible only through inconsistencies in interpretation and application of the law. The study also found that the subject institutions were far closer to equitable salary distribution than the national averages.
