Abstract/Summary:
With the evolution of the Ports around the world, new economies have been created based on competitive advantages and strategies around the concept of clusters and value added. The Port of Ponce, and the prospected Port of the Americas, is not immune to these challenges. In light of this reality, the main objectives of this study are to identify the industries that generate economic value in the Port of Ponce and which could be indicators of the potential industries to be established in the Port of the Americas. In the modern port industry, the concept of value added is considered as important as infrastructure. But, the method to calculate the value added varies in the port industry. In this research, value added calculation is executed based on Antwerp Rule (W. Winkelmans, The Socioeconomic Value of Seaport in the European Union). This rule determines value added based on the determination of categories of the movement of existing loads and its coefficient of correlation.;The study establishes the relation between added value and the concept of cluster, the functions of harbor operations and other value-generator concepts of logistic. Zones of value added designated in the surrounding areas of the Port of the Americas and of industries currently in industrial parks in the region of Ponce was identified. Finally, the study contributes to the valuation of activities that generate value added in a harbor operation, and the determination of potential industrial clusters.
