Abstract/Summary:
Chinese building and real estate industries and government agencies are becoming increasingly interested in green buildings. However, there are no formal and/or national green building rating systems or standards in China.;This thesis concludes that the LEED green building rating system can be applied to the Chinese building market, through adaptation and tailoring to local context. Finally, recommendations for how to adapt the LEED green building rating system for a Shenzhen Green Building Rating System are offered.;This thesis reviews and compares international and Chinese green building programs and examines the feasibility of using the LEED Green Building Rating System in the Chinese building market. The necessity of adapting and modifying LEED is identified through a description of Chinese building practice characteristics, the comparison of LEED and Chinese rating system performance requirements, and the analysis of a preliminary LEED assessment pilot project (the Taige apartment) in Shenzhen city, China.
