Abstract/Summary:
This study investigated relationships among life meaning, relationship satisfaction, romantic love and life satisfaction. The English version of Langle's Existence Scale (ES) was used to measure life meaning. First, the study provided initial validation for Langle's recently translated English version of the ES. Second, relationships between life meaning and relationship satisfaction were investigated. The Exchange-Orientation Scale, Sternberg's Love Scale and the Kansas Relationship Satisfaction Scale (RS) were correlated with life meaning and with one another. Positive correlations were found between all variables except Life Meaning and Exchange Orientation. Third, the mediation of the life meaning (ES)---life satisfaction (SWL) relationship by Relationship Satisfaction was evaluated. It was found that Relationship Satisfaction mediated between Life Meaning and Satisfaction With Life. However, the unique contribution of Life Meaning to Satisfaction With Life remained statistically significant once the contribution of Relationship Satisfaction was statistically removed. Possible interpretations and implications of the results are explored.
