Abstract/Summary:
This thesis paper explores how the educational system in New York State is in crisis. While there are many excellent traditional public schools, others are failing to prepare their students for gainful employment in the global economy. There are excellent traditional public schools where the majority of students go on to higher education or successful careers, but too many students are left behind. Several programs have been put forward to remediate the shortcomings of failing schools. Among the proposals put forth are President Bush's No Child Left Behind and President Obama's Race to the Top. These programs infuse federal dollars into programs to improve the performance of all students. An alternative that has created tensions with the unions was the growth of charter schools. However, reviews of current relations between the two systems indicate progress and that a happy marriage could be likely in the future.
