Abstract/Summary:
The thesis of this work has evolved from a consideration of the question of reforming the educational structures of America from passive purveyors of knowledge into active participants in the creation and management of knowledge as our society fully embraces a "new frontier" called the knowledge economy.; Both definitions and applications of a variety of knowledge structures are examined and dissected in sections one and two the purpose of creating a uniquely American approach to the issues of determining knowledge and its parameters and the best way to utilize, store and present information in means and methods insuring the greatest impact.; Among the assessment tools that are used in this paper's presentation of the critical issues is a case study of the impact of knowledge creation and management in the area of higher education.; This microscopic analysis of the issues is then broadened with an assessment of the policies that have been undertaken by the government of Australia in their attempt to attain a true "knowledge based" economy through the disciplined use of education at all levels.; Finally, in section four, is a presentation of some fundamental changes which need to be undertaken by American educational institutions, in concert with the American government, if we are to move as a society toward knowledge based culture.
