Missionary institutions in China have often been accused of cultural aggression and their Chinese graduates have been overlooked. This thesis is a study of Cheeloo University's Medical School as a test case to examine the impact of its education and ethos on the careers of the graduates. It argues that a moral strength of will was reinforced in the students who spent seven years at Cheeloo Medical School in Jinan, Shandong during the Republican period between 1917 and 1952. This Cheeloo spirit evolved yet maintained the same components that promoted service to China, and is demonstrated in the careers of three sets of graduates after 1947. Cheeloo did this better than other medical schools in China like the PUMC or St. John's by maintaining the same high professional standards but using Chinese instead of English while maintaining higher scientific standards than the missionary medical schools that shared similar ideals of service.
