Abstract/Summary:
Organizations undertake project management processes and disciplines to aid their initiatives which hold the promise to provide reduced costs and improve quality, thus helping to attain the business goal and a competitive advantage. The realization of the importance of project management discipline, however, does not automatically improve project success rates. This final applied project investigated the connection between project phases, project manager (PM) skills and project tools and techniques (PMTT) to draw a relationship among these factors which can affect the project success rate. Based on review and analysis of peer reviewed literature, articles and industry and professional chapter-accepted journals on the respective topic of interest, this final applied project aggregated established techniques and extended a solution to help organizational leaders and staffs comprehend and appreciate the connection among the project success factors. The solution framework proposes an alignment of PM's skill set with the PMTT for a specific project phase. The solution framework has the potential to help organizations identify the different project factors that impact the project outcome and how they may be best configured in relation to each other to achieve project success. It is, however, important for organization leaders to recognize that a one-size-fits-all solution does not exist. While the proposed solution covers two factors in relation to project phases, other environmental factors such as government regulation, market conditions, project methodology, size and complexity, if taken into consideration, may yield a higher project success rate that is influenced by the specific situations facing the organization.
